Frequently Asked
Questions
Q:
Why is the mare care so expensive? It doesn't cost this much to feed a
horse.
A: Mare care not only covers the cost of feed, but if your horse is
stalled, it also covers bedding and the time it takes to care for the
horse. Even if your horse is pastured, there are still costs that need
to be covered, such as insurance to protect both mare and stallion
owner, the upkeep of our facility to insure great care of your mare, and
our time.
Q: What is a booking fee?
A: A booking fee is paid BEFORE breeding to guarantee and hold a spot
for your mare. We can only breed a certain amount of mares per year,
and the booking fee will make sure that your mare is one of them. For
example, if your mare does not take, and needs to come back again, we'll
make sure there is room for her.
Q: My mare is not registered. Can
the foal be registered?
A: If the foal is colored, then yes. It can be registered as a pinto
with PtHA. If it is a breeding stock, then no, not that I am aware of.
Q: What is a breeding stock horse?
A: A breeding stock horse is a paint horse with no markings (solid),
or not enough white to be a regular registry. (Example: a bay with only
a white pastern and a star.)
Q: What is the difference between
a pinto and a paint?
A: A paint horse can only have breeding of a registered thoroughbred,
paint or quarter horse. Any other breed is considered a pinto.
(Example: If a Morgan is bred to an APHA stallion, the foal will be a
pinto, if colored.)
Q: What is the difference between
wet and dry mare care?
A: Wet mare care is when a mare is being bred back and has a foal at
her side. Dry mare care is when there is no foal to care for.
Q: What is a Tobiano?
A: A Tobiano is a color pattern. The head will usually be marked
like a solid colored horse, either being solid or having a blaze,
stripe, star, and/or snip. All four legs will usually be white, at
least below the hocks or knees. Body markings will usually be regular
and distinct, often being oval or round patterns that extend down over
the neck and chest giving the appearance of a shield. The Tobiano paint
will usually have the dark color in one or both flanks. The Tobiano may
either be predominantly dark or white.
Q: What does homozygous for black
mean?
A: Homozygous for the black gene means that the color of his foals
with usually be black. They could also be bay or brown, depending on
the color of the mare, but he will always throw a dark pigmented colored
foal.
Q: How long will my mare have to
stay with you?
A: A mare comes into heat every 21 days, so it depends on where she
is in her cycle as to how long she will have to stay.
Q: What does LFG mean?
A: LFG stands for Live Foal Guarantee. Which means if the foal is
unable to stand and nurse, still born, dies, or needs to be euthanized
within 48 hours of birth, mare owner is entitled to a rebreed at no cost
other than mare care. (This is only valid with a written certificate
from a veterinarian.)
